Prof. Anastasios M. Tamis

MA (Melbourne); Ph.D. (Melbourne), Hons. D. Litt.. (Athens), B.A. (Honors, Melbourne); Dip. Education (La Trobe);               Professor Dr. Anastasios Myrodis Tamis was born in Thessalonice, Greece. He arrived in Australia in 1971. He studied Modern and Ancient Greek literature and Linguistics and completed his postgraduate and doctoral research on social linguistics and the history of the Greek Diasporas. He was honoured with a Doctorate of Letters (Honoris Causa) by the National University of Athens (2006), the Professional Award by the Hellenic Chambers of Commerce and Industries (2002); a laureate of the Academy of Athens (1995); laureate of the Onassis International Award (2006); laureate of the State Book Award by the Hellenic Republic (2007). Professor Tamis has been appointed Head of the Department of Hellenic Studies (1993-1996), inaugural Director of the National Centre for Hellenic Studies and Research (NCHSR) (1997-2008), founder and inaugural Convenor of the Dardalis Archives of the Hellenic Diaspora (1992-2008) and inaugural President of the Australian Institute for Macedonian Studies (1986-2012), Professor with the School of Arts and Sciences, University of Notre Dame, Australia (2009-). Under his directorship and scholarship the NCHSR has been augmented to include the Archives of the Hellenic Diaspora, the Institute for Cypriot Studies, the Institute for Pontic and other Asia Minor Studies, the Institute for Community Education and Training, the Hellenic and Balkan Libraries, the Centre for the Enhancement of the Hellenic Language and Civilization and the Museum of Greek Migration and Settlement. During the last ten years he successfully implemented a substantial infrastructure for researchers and students comprising of manuscripts, newspapers, documents and arguably the largest Hellenic digitalized archival centre in the world. Prof. Tamis has been internationally acknowledged as a world authority in Greek Sociolinguistics and the history of Greek migration and settlement. He is also considered as the expert scholar on the Hellenic Diaspora and the State of the Greek Language in a Language Contact situation. During the last twenty years, he published extensively to various European, American and Australian journals. Since 1985, he published 19 monographs, edited ten books, and authored over 120 chapters and papers in Australia, Europe and America. Among his edited volumes, popular remained: Philathenaios, Studies in Honour of Prof. M. J. Osborne (2010) with Chris Mackie and Sean Byrne; Cyprus in the Modern World (2006) with M. Michael; Greeks in Australia (1988) with Andros Kapardis and Macedonian Hellenism (1999).     Ο Καθηγητής Δρ. Αναστάσιος Μυρώδη Τάμης γεννήθηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη και μετανάστευσε στην Αυστραλία το 1971. Σπούδασε Αρχαία και Νεοελληνική Φιλολογία και ειδικεύτηκε με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στην Κοινωνική Γλωσσολογία και ιστορία της Ελληνικής Διασποράς. Aναγορεύθηκε επίτιμος διδάκτωρ του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (2006), τιμήθηκε, μεταξύ άλλων, με το Βραβείο των Επιστημών από το Hellenic Chambers of Commerce and Industries (2002), Βραβείο Γραμμάτων της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών (1995), Διεθνές Βραβείο Α. Ωνάσσης (2006) Κρατικό Βραβείο Βιβλίου της Ελληνικής Πολιτείας  (2007). Ο Καθηγητής Τάμης εκλέχθηκε Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου La Trobe της Μελβούρνης (1993-1996), ιδρυτικός Διευθυντής του Εθνικού Κέντρου Ελληνικών Μελετών και Έρευνας του Πανεπιστημίου La Trobe [ΕΚΕΜΕ] (1997-2008), ιδρυτής και Διευθυντής των Αρχείων Δαρδάλη της Ελληνικής Διασποράς (1992-2008), ιδρυτικός Πρόεδρος του Αυστραλιανού Ινστιτούτου Μακεδονικών Σπουδών (1986-2012), Καθηγητής στη Σχολή Ανθρωπιστικών Σπουδών και Κοινωνικών Επιστημών του Πανεπιστημίου Notre Dame της Αυστραλίας (2009-). Κατά τη διάρκεια της θητείας του, ως διευθυντού, το ΕΚΕΜΕ αναπτύχθηκε και συμπεριέλαβε τα Αρχεία της Ελληνικής Διασποράς, το Ινστιτούτο Κυπριακών Μελετών, το Ινστιτούτο Ποντιακών και λοιπών Μικρασιατικών Μελετών, το Ινστιτούτο Κοινοτικής Εκπαίδευσης και Κατάρτισης, την Ελληνική και Βαλκάνια Βιβλιοθήκη, το Κέντρο Προβολής και Διάδοσης της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας και το Μουσείο Ελληνικής Μετανάστευσης και Εποίκισης. Κατά τη διάρκεια των δέκα τελευταίων ετών φρόντισε για τη διοργάνωση συστηματικής υποδομής για την έρευνα της ελληνικής γλώσσας και της ελληνικής Διασποράς με εκατομμύρια πρωτότυπα έγγραφα, εφημερίδες, περιοδικά, ώστε να καταστεί μία από τις αρτιότερες ψηφιακές αρχειακές συλλογές της ελληνικής Διασποράς στον κόσμο. Ο Καθηγητής Τάμης αναγνωρίζεται διεθνώς ως καταξιωμένος ερευνητής στη μελέτη και έρευνα της ελληνικής κοινωνιογλωσσολογίας και της ιστορίας της ελληνικής μετανάστευσης και εποίκησης. Θεωρείται επίσης ειδικός κοινωνιογλωσσολόγος σε θέματα που σχετίζονται με τις γλώσσες σε επαφή, τη γλωσσική φθορά, σύγκλιση/απόκλιση και την εν γένει κατάσταση της Ελληνικής σε καθεστώς διγλωσσίας ή διπλογλωσσίας. Τα τελευταία 20 χρόνια εξέδωσε 19 μονογραφίες, επιμελήθηκε δέκα βιβλία και συνέγραψε πάνω από 120 κεφάλαια και άρθρα σε έγκριτα περιοδικά και βιβλία στην Ευρώπη, Αυστραλία κι Αμερική.
